Are You Using Your New Power Tools Safely?

In today's economy more and more people are being forced to do work around the home they wouldn't normally have attempted several years ago. As such the number of accidents and even death from improper tool usage has risen dramatically. The purpose of this article is to acquaint the new do-it-yourselfer with the basic general safety precautions anyone should follow before and during power tool operation.

ALWAYS CONCERN YOURSELF AND OTHERS WITH SAFETY! I cannot stress this enough. Power tools can be dangerous and maim you or your loved ones permanently. If you have any questions about a particular tool's usage a good place to seek help is the place you bought it if it's local. The big home improvement centers offer classes in tool use from time to time. You can ask one of their specialists as well. It's in their best interests to help you.

If you did as so many others are doing and bought the tool online there's still hope. Go to your favorite search engine and do a search for how to use the tool you bought. For example: "How to use the Milwaukee 2432-22 ProPEX Expansion Tool". Try this on YouTube and I suspect the results will surprise you. I just used this very search string on YouTube and got 10 results. The first video I watched showed real people using it on the job site.

Below is a sample checklist I use. A Yes answer to every check indicates a safe work environment:

  1. Do use goggles, a face shield, or safety glasses when using any power tool.
  2. Do take your time in learning to work with each tool.
  3. Do plan ahead.
  4. Do turn aside when powering up a corded tool
  5. Do keep guards in place and good working order.
  6. Do wear non-slip rubber soled shoes
  7. Do support long work pieces properly.
  8. Do inspect and remove all nails or other fasteners from work pieces prior to any cutting operations.
  9. Do take breaks to reduce fatigue.
  10. Do secure work pieces with clamps.
  11. Do follow manufacturer's recommendations.
  12. Do check that adjusting keys and wrenches, if used, are removed from the tool before power is applied.
  13. Do store your tools and accessories properly.
  14. Do use tools in good light.
  15. Do make adjustments with the battery removed or the power turned off.
  16. Do keep hands at a safe distance from blades, cutters and bits while they are moving.
  17. Don't wear neckties, long-sleeved shirts, shorts, jewelry, or loose clothing while working with power tools.
  18. Don't work when you are tired.
  19. Don't force a tool. It will do a safer, more effective job if you let it operate at its own rate.
  20. Don't allow children to use power tools unless you are closely supervising them.
  21. Don't overreach.
  22. Don't leave a corded tool running unattended.

As well as the above another good bit of advice is to keep the work area clean and uncluttered. More accidents are caused by this then you would imagine.

Nothing is more important than using a tool safely. Plan ahead, take your time and safely enjoy using your new power tool. Congratulations on your decision to pick up a new skill which should serve you well in the years to come and also save you tons of money by learning the right and proper way to do it yourself.
