Great Gadget Add-Ons for PCs, iPhones, iPads, and Android Devices

The countdown to Christmas is on, and post-holiday sales will soon follow. With a whole new generation of Windows 8 PCs now in the wings, and more smartphone and tablets always arising, now could be a good time to hold off on buying a brand new device (either as a gift or for yourself), in favor of updating an existing model with sharp new accessories.

Here are 25 suggestions for useful and/or entertaining add-ons, including eight accessories each for PCs, smartphones and iPads and other tablets, plus an overall winner which can work across multiple devices that probably dwell somewhere inside your household.

Just to name three of them, the products range from Seagate's FreeAgent GoFlex external PC hard drive (HD) to GoGroove's FlexSMART Univeral Car Mount for mobile devices and a new docking station from ZAGG which works interchangeably with iPads and Android OS tablets.

Read on to find out pricing and other details about these 25 cool add-ons for PCs, smartphones, and tablets.

PC ACCESSORIES

In today's economy, it might not make that much sense to get rid of an existing notebook or desktop PC that's still functioning just fine. With the right add-on accessories, you can give an existing PC a brighter display, an abundance of expanded multimedia file storage, and a wide assortment of other new capabilities. Eight ideas follow.

With people downloading more videos, music and photos from the Web all the time, Seagate has followed up at 3TB drive introduced last year with the industry's first 4TB external hard drive. Other features of the next gen hard drive include an illuminated capacity gauge and software for automatic continuous backup.

For all of that high capacity, the FreeAgent GoFlex is rather reasonably list-priced at $299.99. When will we see an even roomier 5TB product entry? Time will tell.

Western Digital My Passport

MSRP: $229.99

If you're looking for an external storage drive with a somewhat lower price point and/or a sleeker form factor, The Western Digital My Passport Essential line-up continues to deliver solid performance.

WD's latest edition adds USB 3.0 to the drive's earlier 2.0 functionality, for speedier file transfers. Capacity ranges as high as 1TB.

HP Compaq LE2202x Essential Display

MSRP: $179

If you're ever seen either an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy S smartphone (and who hasn't by now?), then you've witnessed the brilliance of IPS display technology.

With its Essential Display lineup, HP brings IPS to affordably priced desktop PC displays, at list pricing as low as $179 for the 21.5-inch LE2202x model.

Kensington Orbit Trackball

MSRP: $59.99

Has the time arrived to replace an aging mouse with a brand new pointer? If so, the Kinsington Orbit Trackball could be the perfect choice.

This wireless trackball mouse has gained earned our recommendation due to its responsiveness, smooth and comfortable build, ease of use, and design. It also helps that Kensington throws in free software and a 5-year limited warranty. The Orbit will work with Microsoft Windows 7, Windows XP, and Vista, in addition to Apple's Mac OS PCs.

Penclic Mouse

MSRP: $85

Others are taking more innovative approaches to computing input. Back in September, Swedish firm Prestige International first announced plans to deliver the Penclic Mouse, a new peripheral aimed at bringing together the best aspects of pen and mouse computing in a single gizmo.

Now the Penclic is available for purchase, just in time for the holidays. As its name implies, the Penclic consists of a digital pen attached to a flexible joint, sitting on top of a moveable mouse.

Logitech Wireless Touchpad

MSRP: $49.99

In anticipation of more gesture-driven Windows 8 computing, Logitech is breaking ground in quite a different way.

The new Logitch Wireless Touchpad lets you scroll through documents and Web pages with the use of two fingers, for example, or swipe with four fingers to switch from one application to the next. Thus far, the touchpad supports Windows 7 PCs.

750GB Seagate Momentus XT

MSRP: $245

Actually, the 750GB Seagate Momentus XT would be better described as an upgrade, as opposed to an add-on, because it's only available in an internal form factor.

We're including it here, though, because it represents the latest in a line of "hybrid" drives which promises to deliver ultra-fast application launch times at a fraction of the cost of pure solid state drives (SSDs). Seagate's second gen hydrid drive produces both more storage and faster performance.

Panasonic HDC-SDX1 Camcorder

MSRP: $500

Since when does a camcorder qualify as a PC add-on device? When the camcorder doubles as a Webcam, that's when.

The Panasonic HDC-SDX1 Camcorder turns in superior performance as a Webcam, while also functioning well as a light and versatile standalone camcorder. Panasonic has rolled some high-end camcorder features into this entry-level device, list-priced at $500.

SMARTPHONE ACCESSORIES

Some add-on accessories for smartphones are specific to either iPhones or various Android OS models. Others, however, can be used with any phone -- and in some cases, with PCs and tablets, too. Keep that in mind as you browse through the following gizmos, which add functionality such as on-the-go battery recharging, in-vehicle use, enhanced music listening and playback, easier text input, and more.

Bluetooth Watch with Caller ID Display

MSRP: $79.99

A smartphone doesn't offer the larger display space of a PC, or even of a tablet. What's more, it isn't always convenient to look at a smartphone display, anyway -- let's say, if you're in a business meeting or riding a bike.

In response, Geek.com offers a Bluetooth display watch with caller ID and controls to let you see who's calling and decide whether to take a call immediately, let it go to voicemail, or reject it.

Motorola Atrix HD Multimedia Dock

MSRP: $99.99

Question: How do you give a smartphone the same functionality as a notebook or desktop PC? Answer: You plug it into the Motorola Atrix HD Multimedia Dock.

Motorola's dock comes with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse desktop set. Yet the sole catch -- and it's a big one -- is that the dock only works with Motorola's Android-enabled Atrix 4G phone.

Kensington PowerLift Dock for iPhone

MSRP: $50

For users of Apple's iPhone, Kensington produces quite a different type of dock.

The Kensington PowerLift Dock for iPhone incorporates a stand with a small external battery that can do an excellent job of extending the mobile operating life of eithe an iPhone or an iPod.

GoGroove FlexSMART Universal Car Mount

Price: $30

Many different car mounts are devised specifically for iPhones, and for various and sundry Android phones. Yet what if you can't find a car mount for your model, or if you're less than impressed with what's available for your phone?

There are lots of "universal" car mounts out there, too, but many aren't all that great. The GoGroove FlexSMART, on the other hand, is a car mount that features a little of everything anyone might need, starting with an innovative gooseneck connection to the car's cigarette lighter port, which doubles as its mounting point. Also included are a powered USB port, for charging any device (even those that don't take a universal microUSB plug); a built-in FM transmitter; a 3.5mm plug; and a backlit digital display.

Jawbone ERA Bluetooth Headset

MSRP: $130

For listening to music and other pursuits, lots of folks use low-end wireless headsets, priced as low as under $20. For those who want to step up the audio, Jawbone's ERA Bluetooth Headset offers wideband-quality sound, some audio UI capabilities, and even an accelerometer.

Priced at $130, the headset works with any Bluetooth-enabled device, including PCs and tablets along with smartphones

ThinkGeek's TK-421 Case with Flip-Out Keyboard

MSRP: $49.99

Some Android OS phones -- such as the Motorola Droid 3, for example -- still come with hardware keyboards. Yet the iPhone, of course, does not.

For iPhone owners who want to add that feature, ThinkGeek's TK-421 is a protective case with a swivel-out hard keyboard underneath. List-priced at $49.99, the lightweight gizmo weighs in at only about an ounce-and-a-half.

OtterBox Case

MSRP: $49.99

With or without special features such as swivel-out hard keyboards, tons of different protective cases are available for various sorts of smartphones. OtterBox, for instance, offers a range of effective protective solutions for just about any phone model. Even when there are omissions, OtterBox ultimately seems to take care of that.

To cite one example, for a while, the OtterBox line-up did not cover Apple's latest iPhone model, the 4S. In October, however, OtterBox started to release cases in its Defender, Reflex, and Commuter series which will accommodate both versions of the iPhone 4. Browse though the OtterBox Web site, and you'll see protective cases specifically tailored to Android OS phones from Dell, LG, HTC....You name it.

Galaxy Player

MSRP: $269

At first glance, Samsung's Galaxy Player looks more like a smartphone than an accessory. In fact, you might even mistake the player for a Galaxy S II phone, since the two devices are similar in appearance except for small differences around screen dimensions. More specifically, the Galaxy Player (shown at left) comes in 4- and 5-inch versions whereas the Galaxy S II phone (pictured above at the start of the Smartphones Accessories section) is available with either a 4.2- or 4.5-inch screen, depending on mobile carrier.

The player, though, is actually specifically designed as a competitor to Apple's iPod and as a "companion" to Samsung's Android phone. Some might find toting both types of Samsung gadgets to be a bit cumbersome. However, for anyone downloading large volumes of digital multimedia content, the WiFi-only player can serve very useful purposes for playback and extra storage, particularly when used inside the house.

Kotego Dot Panoramic Camera Accessory

MSRP: $49.95

The iPhone's camera keeps getting better, due not just to improvements in the camera itself but to a growing number of impressive camera accessories. Take, for example, the new Kotego Dot Panoramic iPhone 4/4S add-on.

You can now can shoot videos of what's "all around you," instead of just what's directly in front of you. The Kotego Dot is a clip-on lens -- or as Kotego calls it, a "panoramic viewing accessory" -- that lets you shoot 360-degree panoramic video and then share the digital footage via Facebook, Twitter, and Kotego.com.

ACCESSORIES FOR iPADS & OTHER TABLETS

While iPads and other tablets offer roomier displays than smartphones, these bigger mobile gizmos share similar needs around device protection and battery recharging, Onboard storage can generally use a boost, and alternative input methods can also come in handy. Here are eight products that can increase the functionality of iPads and/or Android tablets.

Wacom Bamboo Stylus for iPad 2

MSRP: $30

A stylus can serve as a convenient method on inputting information into a tablet, and it offers greater precision than tapping or gliding your fingers on the touchscreen.

We've found the Wacom Bamboo Stylus to be well constructed and extremely useful for day-to-day operating needs. Priced at merely $30, the stylus might work as a great stocking-stuffer for an iPad 2 owner.

Seagate GoFlex Satellite Network Drive

MSRP: $200

The Seagate GoFlex Satellite is a slick device for extending the storage capacity of either an iPad or an Android tablet.

Offering up to five hours of continuous streaming, the Satellite doesn't require a connection to an outside power source. We've found that the satellite works particularly well in movie streaming.

Western Digital My Book Live

MSRP: $159.99 for 1 TB

The WD My Book Live might not be the simplest thing to set up, but once you get going with it, the expanded storage is practically seamless.

You can easily jump back and forth between browsing the Web and accessing files stored in My Book Live, all without messing with your WiFi settings.

Logitech Keyboard Case by Zagg

MSRP: $100

The Logitech Keyboard Case by ZAGG functions as both a wireless keyboard and protective casing against any bruises, bumps or falls.

Zagg now makes separate models specifically designed for the iPad 2 and for Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet, for example.

Morphie Workbook

Price: $49

For those more interested in style than in a wireless keypad, Morphie sells a wireless protective case offering full access to the iPad 2's ports and controls, magnetic integration for waking the tablet and putting it to sleep, and the ability to convert to a stand with a wide range of viewing angles.

Priced at $49, the Morphie Workbook is a folio-styled case made from plush-looking synthetic leather.

ZAGGKeys FLEX

Price: $79.99

For anyone who owns both an iPad and an Android tablet, the FLEX swings either way -- iPad or Android -- with just the flick of a switch.

This wireless, rechargeable keyboard from ZAGG is both lightweight and compact, with tactility that will be appreciated by touch typists and thumbers alike.

AirStash

Price: $100

AirStash, a product from a company of the same name, is an SD card hub small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. It provides up to 32GB of storage per SD card.

Users can also carry and swap out multiple SD cards for even more storage. AitStash also supplies its own WiFi network for data access, plus a free app for iPad users.

HELO TC RC Helicopter

MSRP: $50

After working on your iPad all day, why not have some fun with Griffin's HELO TC RC Helicopter?

Even when the iPad-driven helicopter started crashing and flying out of control, we had a blast. While a battery life indicator would be greatly appreciated (and perhaps an accompanying orchestra playing Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" when the chopper is airborne), the HELO TC RC Helicopter is still a highly enjoyable gadget.

And the Overall Winner Is...

HP Officejet 100 Mobile Printer

MSRP: $279.99

Although the HP Officejet 100 Mobile Printer is marketed mainly to the enterprise market, this mobile printer be quite useful to just about anyone who does any work away from the home or office, even if that's only on get away weekends to the mountains or the lake.

Featuring a long-life lithium ion battery, the compact portable printer outputs up to 500 pages when fully charged.

What's more, this Windows-driven but Bluetooth-enabled printer is capable of syncing with a variety of devices, including Android, RIM Blackberry, Symbian and Windows Phone mobile gadgets.

Lenovo ThinkPad E220s Review for Australians

The ThinkPad E220s is the 12-inch sibling of the 14-inch Lenovo ThinkPad E420s notebook. This pleasantly portable laptop offers the latest generation Intel Core series processors and graphics with 4GB of system memory. Good performance and a reasonable price in a notebeook that weighs just a little more than three pounds ... what's not to like?

Lenovo offers several configuration options for the ThinkPad E220s but at the time of this writing the two featured processor options available at Lenovo.com are the slower Intel Core i3-2357M processor (1.30GHz) and the faster Intel Core i7-2617M processor (1.5GHz). Like the 14-inch E420s we previously reviewed, the E220s doesn't come with the same two- or three-year standard warranty as other ThinkPad business notebooks. In addition, Lenovo uses a non-removable battery and a 7mm thin Seagate hard drive (standard notebook hard drives are 9.5mm) in order to give this laptop a lighter weight and thinner shape.

Electronic-parts.com.au supplies high quality cheap laptop batteries such as Lenovo laptop battery, Dell laptop battery, TOSHIBA laptop battery and more, power tools batteries, camcorder batteries, digital camera batteries, mobile phone batteries, laptop AC adapters, laptop DC adapters, battery chargers, PDA batteries and other devices for Australia customers.

Build and Design
As previously mentioned, the E220s is the smaller version of the 14-inch E420s. These E-series notebooks have several design elements that set them apart from the traditional ThinkPad exterior. The E220s has rounded corners and polished metal trim around the edges rather than the all-business, box-like shape that has become a hallmark of ThinkPads. Open the screen lid and you'll find a simplified keyboard and touchpad without extra media buttons or quick launch keys. The screen has a large glossy piece of plastic covering it, which Lenovo calls "Infinity Glass". It helps improve contrast and color saturation but it also creates reflections from sunlight or bright indoor lights and is a magnet for smudges and dirt on your display. .

Although the exterior of the E220s is very consumer friendly, this notebook has a metal alloy support structure inside the chassis for increased durability. Lenovo also gave the E220s a spill-resistant keyboard, "ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery" which restores your system settings in the event of a system crash and the typical "Active Protection System" which detects sudden drops and parks your hard drive to prevent hard disk failure from drops. As nice as those features are I wasn't impressed with the support structure of the screen lid. It flexes too easily and I am concerned about long-term screen protection if you're a frequent traveler. I can't imagine this lid can withstand too many hits from a flight attendant jamming suitcases into the overhead compartment.

The more interesting part of the E220s' design is Lenovo's commitment to being eco-friendly. The E220s is EPEAT Gold, ENERGY STAR and RoHS compliant, the LED-backlit displays are 100% free of mercury and arsenic. The plastic components are made from more than 10% recycled material and the notebook comes in 100% recycled paperboard packaging printed with nontoxic inks. My only complaint is that Lenovo apparently thinks environmentally conscious consumers don't like removable batteries. The Li-polymer battery in the ThinkPad E220s is packed inside the chassis and there is no easy way to replace the battery on your own without complete disassembly of the laptop.

Ports and Features

The E220s has a modest selection of ports including standard VGA, HDMI v1.4, Ethernet, two USB 2.0 ports, a USB 2.0/eSATA combo port and a memory card reader. I'm a little disappointed that Lenovo didn't include a USB 3.0 port for modern high-speed hard drives and flash drives, but that's a common omission in this price range. Since the E220s is a hybrid of a consumer laptop and a small business notebook, you don't get a docking station port or an ExpressCard slot. All picture descriptions are left to right.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The E220s features the newer "Chiclet" or island-style keyboard with extra spacing between the keys. This is the one area that continues to divide many ThinkPad owners; some of whom continue to think Lenovo should use the same keyboard used on the ThinkPad T60 five years ago. This new keyboard has a fantastic feel with excellent key travel (the distance between pressed and un-pressed positions) and each key has a slightly concave surface to help improve typing accuracy.

I think it's unfortunate that the keyboard is not backlit. The E220s has the old "ThinkLight" which is essentially a LED flashlight built into the screen bezel next to the webcam that shines down on the keyboard. Some people argue that the ThinkLight offers better visibility in the dark compared to a backlit keyboard but since the light is built into the screen lid you have to tilt the screen forward to get just the right amount of light on the keyboard ... which isn't always ideal for viewing the screen.

The E220s has the traditional TrackPoint pointing stick in the center of the keyboard with three buttons below the spacebar. This continues to be a great way to control your mouse cursor and gives you a three-button mouse at the same time. The touchpad is one of the new extra-large "buttonless clickpad" with a matte surface. This works by you pressing down on the bottom left or right corners to click. Lenovo did a reasonable job here, but it isn't perfect. We found the clickpad requires varying levels of pressure to register a click and it won't always register a click depending on where your fingers are touching the clickpad surface.

Screen and Speakers
The E220s has a 12.5-inch display with a "glass" surface and a 720p (1366x768) resolution. This appears to be the same 12.5-inch panel used on the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 with a 16:9 aspect ratio and LED backlighting. The E220, however, has a reflection-prone glossy layer over the screen instead of the plane matte surface on the U260. Our test lab results show the display has a peak brightness of 228 nit with an average contrast ratio of roughly 175:1.

Horizontal Viewing angles are relatively good and vertical viewing angles are pretty narrow. There is significant color inversion after 20 degrees off-center vertically. This shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't try to view the screen from above or below.

The E220s has a speaker bar below the screen that holds two very small speakers. They deliver a surprising level of sound clarity and decent volume despite their diminutive size. There is just the slightest hint of bass so if you plan to listen to your entire music library on this laptop then you'll want to buy a set of hood headphones or external speakers.

Audio out options include HDMI and a headphone jack. Note the headphone jack doubles as a microphone jack; therefore when buying a headset, make sure you get one that supports the combo port (i.e. also has a combo microphone/headphone jack as well).

Electronic-parts.com.au manufactures and sells high performance SONY Laptop Battery. Our batteries will ensure optimum performance saving you time and money. These SONY Laptop Battery made specifically for your laptop and to meet or exceed the original manufacturer specifications. All Laptop Battery for SONYare brand new with full 1 year warranty guarantee and 30 days money back gurantee! Shipped fast! (Express Delivery : 1-3 days, Normal Delivery: 2-7days).

Performance and Benchmarks
The E220s is loaded with enough processor and graphics power to handle everyday tasks like office productivity software and web browsing with ease. The Core i5 processor in our review unit is fast enough for more demanding photo and video editing applications. The 4GB of memory included in this system is enough for basic multitasking and the Seagate hard drive is reasonably fast but Lenovo also offers an optional 128GB solid state drive (SSD) for those people who want faster performance. Although the E220s features the newer Intel HD Graphics 3000 this laptop is not intended for gaming and you'll probably run into the occasional problem if you try to play a variety of graphics-intense games.

Heat and Noise
The E220s is basically silent during normal web browsing or using Microsoft Office. Its single cooling fan pushes hot air out the exhaust on the right side of the chassis; the heat only becomes noticeable if you block the exhaust or stress the processor with HD video editing or gaming. At maximum speed the fan in our review unit produced a weak high-pitched whine but it wasn't loud enough to be disruptive in a typical office or classroom environment. The fan does a good job keeping the notebook cool; the area around the vent on the bottom of the notebook is the only area that gets warm. All exterior temperatures shown below are listed in degrees Fahrenheit.

Battery Life
We measured a rather unimpressive four hours and 48 minutes of battery life during our battery rundown test (Windows 7 Balanced power profile, 70% screen brightness, wireless active, and refreshing a web page every 60 seconds). This is better than the battery life from the similarly sized Lenovo IdeaPad U260 but it's barely more than half the battery life of the ThinkPad X220.

Again, keep in mind that the E220s' battery is non-removable similar to Apple MacBooks or the Alienware M11x. Once the battery is drained you have to find a power outlet because you cannot simply put in a spare or attach a battery slice.

Conclusion
The Lenovo ThinkPad E220s is a reasonably attractive and well-equipped 12-inch laptop for average consumers and small business professionals. This laptop has its share of flaws, but the flaws are largely minor considering the fact you can buy this thin and light notebook for less than $650 online.

Less than five hours of battery life while web browsing is below average these days and you can't swap batteries on your own. The lack of USB 3.0 combined with the quirky touchpad are also issues that I hope Lenovo addresses in next year's model.

The biggest problem for the E220s might actually come in the form of Lenovo's own ThinkPad X220. For just $220 more than the base price of the E220s you can buy the vastly superior X220. The E220s is indeed a nice laptop, but if you're a business professional I'd have a hard time recommending this laptop instead of the ThinkPad X220 unless your budget is limited to $700.

Pros:

  • Thin and relatively light design
  • Good keyboard, thouchpad and TrackPoint
  • Decent mid-level performance

Cons:

  • Unimpressive battery life
  • Integrated battery
  • No USB 3.0

This came extremely fast, works great. Very happy with service. If I need to get another one, I will certainly come back and see if they have what I am looking for. Thanks for the great service and great Dell INSPIRON 15 Laptop Battery.

while i was looking to buy a new Dell INSPIRON 15 battery for my laptop in the store, i could not find any bargained price until a friend of mine told to me to look into which sites. in the begining i was little reluctant to buy any electronic items from those sites regardles of prices, cause my perception was, you never get the right quality no matter what the ad's say. however after second thought i decided to order this 4800mAh Dell INSPIRON 15 battery from e-store.net.au with great bargain price. not only i got the product on timely delivery, also it's working great ever since i got it.it completely blew me away. i am no longer cynical about buying electronics product from your site. i strongly recommend everybody to buy these kind's of electronics accessories not only for their price but also for their quality.interestingly, i ended up buying a new battery for my garmin cell phone not long after buying this product.not to mention i am quite happy with that product also.

Works great and is exactly what I needed! It was a great Dell battery for a low price and does what it is supposed to do.

I expected to wait a while for this to arrive, but it was at my doorstep quickly. It is exactly as described and replaced my dying original laptop battery. I haven't been using it for more than a week, but if there are any issues, I will update my review.

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook T4220, and the charger for it is awfully hard to find. Luckily, I discovered this site. I had accidentally left my charger in my dorm when I went home for break, and i needed to use my laptop. This is a perfect substitute. I had it running for four of five days nonstop, and neither my laptop nor the charger overheated.

I wish the rush shipping could have been faster though. Works flawlessly.

Nice Comments on Makita 1434 Bttery buy from E-store

MAKITA 1434 power tool batteryMAKITA 1434 battery
Powered-up Again
I have many Makita cordless tools and they get used almost on a daily business on the farm and our construction projects. Here in Arizona 100 degrees is not uncommon and most of the time in the summer hotter. I understand that heat destroys batteries and we have about 6 of them on the bench that will not hold a charge from use.
When we began a search for batteries to replace the wornout ones we were in a situation where the cost of the replacements did not justify the condition of the tools. We have 4 drills, 2 saws and 2 impacts. It is a comfort to find replacement sets that are affordable and allow us to continue to recover the high cost of the cordless tools. With no power in most locations Makita tools have proven to be very durable and reliable.

The battery pack came at less than 1/2 price of the large hardware stores. packaged in orig. packaging and received very fast. Best deal out there.

Exactly what I needed
The Makita 2-3/5 Amp Hour NiMH Pod Style Battery set is exactly what I needed for my Impact Driver and Driver Drill set. The batteries provide me with the amount of power I expect from Makita. I expect the set will last as long as their predecessors.(MAKITA 193176-1 power tool battery)

Great Price! Great packs!
I checked these battery packs at my local specialty tool store..$86.00 a piece!!
I saved lots of green on Amazon..!!

Great upgrade
Having worn out my original 14.4v red ni-cad batteries, I was reluctant at first to spend the money on these batteries, they aren't cheap. BUT,now that it's been a month or so with them, it's good to see they aren't cheap. I cannot believe the improvement these Ni-mh batteries are over the ni-cads. Even when the ni-cads were new, they can't hold a candle to these ni-mh batteries. Very happy with my investment of these, makes my job easier AND more productive having batteries that last between charge cycles. ( MAKITA BH 9020B battery )

Excellent deal
This is the best price anywhere to be found - essentially 2 batteries for the price of one. When my old batteries died, I couldn't stomach $80+ for one battery at the local Lowes, so I looked around, including the price of having my current ones "rebuilt". These are 2 new batteries, and the price is less than having my old ones rebuilt. The work great. Very satisfied.

Mikita 14.4v battery 2-pack
The product came within a week. The batteries are new, in original packaging. I charged them and have been using them with no indications that they will not perform like the original batteries. So far this has been a great find.

Build and Design
At first glance the new Satellite L740/L745 series looks virtually the same as the rest of the budget-priced Satellite notebooks from the last year. The rounded clamshell chassis wrapped in a mixture of glossy and matte plastic is a mixture of metallic brown and black. What makes the L740/L745 series "unique" from a design perspective is that this same chassis is used for multiple Satellite notebooks with a wide range of internal configurations.(TOSHIBA SATELLITE A135-S4527 Laptop Battery)

In short, this 14-inch plastic shell was designed to fit the needs of everything from $500 laptops to custom configurations priced at more than $900. What's that old saying about a "Jack of all trades?"

The screen lid and the top panel that surrounds the keyboard are both made of thin glossy plastics with a brown "dot matrix" pattern. I'm sure the glossy plastics look good on display in stores but the all-gloss surface is prone of picking up smudges from fingerprints as well as any other specks of dirt that come into contact with the laptop.

The all-plastic construction of the L745D means you end up with both a main chassis and screen lid that flex under pressure and "squeak" softly when you squeeze it next to the areas with thinner plastics.( TOSHIBA SATELLITE A215-S5837 Laptop Battery ) The only parts of this laptop that feel particularly durable are the screen hinges on this model which are reasonably tight and hold the screen in position when you move the laptop from one location to another. I'm sure this laptop will survive just fine as a desktop replacement, but I have doubts that the thin plastics used in the L745D will survive daily use and abuse by a high school student if he or she carries it in a backpack with books every day.

The bottom of the notebook is rather basic but it's quite friendly in terms of upgrades. There are two access panels beneath the laptop that give you access to the hard drive, RAM, and wireless card. Most people buying a $500 laptop are unlikely to install any hardware upgrades, but you might be surprised how much snappier this budget notebook becomes with a faster hard drive (more on that later in the performance section).

Ports and Features
The new Satellite L745D features an adequate selection of ports. You get three USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, VGA, Ethernet and a memory card slot in addition to the DVD drive. There is no ExpressCard slot for adding new ports and Toshiba neglected to include either USB 3.0 or eSATA ... probably to keep the MSRP at or below $500.

Keyboard and Touchpad
I have to confess that I've been a fan of many Toshiba keyboards over the last two years. The L745D comes with a full-size keyboard that uses a hybrid of a traditional layout with flat individual keys similar to what you'll find on Chiclet-style keyboards. Each key is responsive and provides excellent key travel.(TOSHIBA PA3534U-1BAS Battery) The keys are large and flat and have a glossy texture that shows smudges from your skin oils over time. The support structure under the keyboard is quite firm and the keyboard doesn't "bounce" when you type with heavy pressure. My only complaint is that the keyboard lacks LED backlighting for typing under low light ... but I can forgive the lack of a backlit keyboard on a $500 laptop.

The Synaptics touchpad is fairly nice with a matte texture that provides smooth cursor movement. The touchpad driver delivers excellent accuracy and minimal lag with a range of options. The dedicated touchpad buttons are a welcome sight now that so many companies are using buttonless "clickpads" (which often don't work extremely well). The left and right touchpad buttons emit a rather loud "ca-chunk" when pressed, so you might irritate coworkers or classmates if you're constantly clicking the buttons.

Screen and Speakers
The L745D has a 14.0-inch diagonal display with LED backlighting and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The overall quality of the display is "average or below average" within the narrow vertical viewing angle sweet spot. The backlight is even and bright (210 nits according to our light meter), contrast is reasonably sharp (285:1) and colors are good though the colors are a little too saturated at the default settings. The two complaints I had with this screen are the narrow vertical viewing angles (common laptop displays that use standard TN panels) and the fact it was slightly "off center" within the frame. You can actually see a little more black edge on the right side of the screen than the left side ... a sign that someone wasn't too concerned about quality control.

The display's 1366x768 resolution is a standard resolution for mainstream notebooks. The horizontal resolution is adequate, however only 768 pixels of vertical space means a good deal of scrolling while surfing the Internet and only enough space to view about one-half of a page in a Microsoft Word. This is pretty standard for a modern 14-inch laptop, but since the E305 comes with a Blu-ray drive, it's important to point out you can't watch true 1080p video on this laptop's built-in screen.

The Satellite L745D features non-branded stereo speakers located just above the keyboard. This location is great for pushing sound up and toward the user. Although the audio quality was fine, I was expecting the speakers to sound better based on my first look at the notebook. The speaker grills are quite large but if you examine them closely you'll notice that the actual speakers only take up a tiny amount of space under the grills. If you want to experience premium sound with this laptop then you'll need to invest in a good set of earphones or external speakers.

Performance and Benchmarks
The Toshiba Satellite L740 and L745 Series is available in multiple configurations with either Intel or AMD processors. The Satellite L745D-S4220 is the least expensive configuration in this 14-inch family of laptops. This notebook uses the AMD "Zacate" E-350 accelerated processing unit (APU) which combines a dual-core CPU running at a 1.6 GHz clock speed with a Radeon graphics processing unit (GPU) on a single processor die.

The non-technical translation is that the L745D-S4220 uses a small-yet-powerful combination of processor and graphics that was designed to offer good performance and low power consumption at a low cost. Unfortunately, this also means that the L745D-S4220 has the worst performance among the L740/L745 series.

The E-350 processor and Radeon HD 6310 graphics offer more than enough power for basic computing tasks like writing school papers, browsing the web, editing photos or even watching HD movies on the Netflix website. However, if you're planning to edit many HD home movies or you want to play the latest games you're probably better off spending $100 extra to buy the Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4230 with AMD Quad-Core A6-3400M processor.

That said, even the slightly more expensive upgrade doesn't solve the biggest problem with the L745D's performance: a slow hard drive. Toshiba decided to use one of the slowest (if not the slowest) hard drives we've seen in recent memory. The Seagate 5400rpm hard drive used inside our review unit was so slow that it impacted everything from Windows startup to opening files. We know it was the slow hard drive at fault because after running our performance benchmarks we replaced the stock hard drive with a Western Digital 5400rpm hard drive and not only did the notebook startup faster but both the PCMark and 3DMark scores increased slightly.

Bottom line, the Satellite L745D-S4220 gives you better performance than a typical netbook but the hard drive is painfully slow.

PCMark 7 measures overall system performance (higher scores mean better performance):

3DMark06 measures overall graphics performance for gaming (higher scores mean better performance):

3DMark Vantage measures overall graphics performance for gaming (higher scores mean better performance):

Heat and Noise
The Toshiba L745D manages to stay extremely "lap friendly" even when you're stressing the processor and graphics with things like HD video encoding or gaming. I suspect most of the credit for this laptop's low external temperatures is due to the AMD E-350 processor inside. This processor was originally designed to fit inside smaller "netbook-sized" laptops, so when Toshiba put this AMD processor inside a larger 14-inch shell it left plenty of room for empty space and air flow. The self-adjusting fan will speed up when needed but the noise produced by the cooling fan is never loud enough to be disruptive. The exterior temperatures shown below are listed in degrees Fahrenheit.

Battery Life
In the "balanced" power mode with 75% screen brightness, the Satellite L745D-S4220 lasted for five hours and eleven minutes of non-stop use with wireless active and refreshing a page every 60 seconds. This is "okay" for a modern 14-inch notebook with a stock 6-cell battery and it's happily very close to Toshiba's advertised 5 and a half hours of battery life.

However, it's worth mentioning that even some smaller notebooks like the HP Pavilion dm1z use 6-cell batteries with higher capacities than the battery in the L745D. The battery in this laptop is rated at 48Wh which is a surprisingly low capacity for a 14-inch laptop. The budget-priced L745D barely delivers more battery time than the HP ENVY 14 ... and that laptop is using a powerful processor and graphics that consume more battery power.

Battery life test results (higher scores mean better battery life):

Conclusion
If you are currently in the market for a low-cost 14-inch laptop that has enough muscle to perform basic tasks (Microsoft Office work or light Photoshop editing) and has the graphics capability to play streaming HD video, then the Toshiba Satellite L745D might be a good choice.

Unfortunately, I have to stress the word, "might" in that previous sentence. The single biggest problem preventing the L745D from earning a stronger recommendation is that Toshiba might have cut too many corners on this laptop so it could be sold at a $500 or lower price. The AMD E-350 dual-core processor and AMD Radeon HD 6310 graphics aren't horribly weak in terms of performance, but if you pair them with an extremely slow hard drive and an average battery the end result is cheap laptop with subpar performance.

If Toshiba used a faster hard drive inside the Satellite L745D this notebook would have felt much "snappier" during general use and it would have performed as well or better than the HP Pavilion dm1z (which has similar technical specs). Likewise, a higher-capacity battery would have made this budget laptop really stand out for back-to-school buyers.

In short, if you buy the Toshiba Satellite L745D and plan to do more than surf the web or write school papers then we highly recommend that you also invest in a faster hard drive or solid state drive in order to give this laptop a much needed speed boost.

Review Summary:

An affordable laptop for school, but be prepared to upgrade the hard drive if you want decent performance.

Pros

  • Good HD video and light gaming performance
  • Low cost
  • Good keyboard and touchpad

Cons

  • Horribly slow hard drive
  • Thick with cheap plastics
  • Low-quality screen

Gateway ID47H02u ‎Laptop Details and Reviews

With a premium aluminum-alloy design and an ultra-thin bezel that squeezes a 14-inch screen into what's usually a 13-inch space, the Gateway ID47H02u makes a very good first impression. For a reasonable $699, this thin-and-light laptop also includes a powerful Core i5 processor, USB 3.0, and Dolby Home Theater sound.GATEWAY NV5212U Laptop Battery Is this the best 14-inch notebook around?

Design

Sporting a brushed aluminum-alloy lid and deck, metallic-colored keys, and a slick dark blue-tinted touchpad, the Gateway ID47H02u oozes style. Even the matte-black bottom and sides have a smooth surface, with a minimum of extraneous holes and grooves. The remarkable 0.2-inch black bezel surrounding the screen not only fits a 14-inch display in the same space normally reserved for a 13-inch panel, but it also adds a unique design flair.

Thanks to its thin bezel, the 13 x 9 x 1.1-inch Gateway ID47H02u is about half an inch shorter than many other 14-inch notebooks, such as the 13.3 x 9.8 x 1.1-inch ASUS U41JF and the 13.5 x 9.6 x 1.1-inch Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820TG. At 4.4 pounds, the ID47H02u is also lighter than the ASUS U41JF (4.8 pounds) and the TimelineX 4820TG (4.6 pounds).GATEWAY NV5216U Laptop Battery The HP Pavilion dm4t is a little thicker, but it has the same weight and depth, at 13.4 x 9 x 1.3 inches and 4.4 pounds.

Keyboard and TouchPad

The island-style keyboard on the ID47 provided reasonable tactile feedback, good key placement, and a comfortable deck that allowed us to achieve a strong score of 86 words per minute with a 1-percent error rate on the Ten Thumbs Typing Test, 8 percent faster than our average score. However, the keyboard did show a small amount of flex, particularly when we pressed down on the G and H keys. We do appreciate that the function keys are reversed so you can adjust the brightness and activate media controls without using combos.

The fairly large 3.9 x 2.3-inch Synaptics ClickPad has a slick, glossy surface with a unique blue color. Navigating the desktop wasn't difficult, but the touchpad picks up fingerprints easily and creates a little more friction that we'd prefer. Multitouch geatures such as pinch-to-zoom worked, but they were jerky. GATEWAY NV5337U Laptop Battery Those who use the touchpad with two fingers will experience some jerkiness and occasional unintended zooming. You can also scroll with two fingers and show the desktop at any time with a four-finger swipe down.

Heat

The Gateway ID47H02u stayed pleasantly cool throughout our testing. After streaming a video for 15 minutes at full screen, we measured the touchpad at 84 degrees, the keyboard at 85 degrees, and the bottom at a chilly 79 degrees Fahrenheit. We consider temperatures below 95 degrees comfortable and those below 90 degrees imperceptible.

Display and Audio

The Gateway ID47H02u's 14.1-inch, 1366 x 768 200-nit glossy screen provided sharp, rich images. When we tried watching both a 1080p QuickTime trailer for Immortals and a 1080p YouTube trailer for Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, images were crisp and motion was smooth, but colors inverted at even 45 degree angles. Dark areas also showed a high amount of backlight bleed.

The stereo speakers located on the bottom of the Gateway ID47H02u provided accurate audio that was loud enough to fill a room. Bass-heavy songs from the Forget Me Nots, Kool and the Gang's "Summer Madness," and the Isley Brothers' "Between the Sheets" offered a rich, clear separation of sound. However, guitar-laden tunes such as Motley Crue's "Looks that Kill" had a rough, distorted tone that became more palatable when we turned down the volume a notch. GATEWAY NV5435U Laptop BatteryThe Dolby Home Theater v.4 software makes a huge difference, as all songs were flat when we toggled the application off.

Ports and Webcam

The Gateway ID47H02u has a generous selection of ports, including one USB 3.0 connector that allows you to connect high-speed external hard drives and docking stations. The right side of the laptop houses an Ethernet port, Kensington lock, and that speedy USB 3.0 port. A VGA port, HDMI, audio in/out, and two more USB ports line the left side. The front lip sports a 5-in-1 card reader.

The 720p webcam provided sharp colorful images when used near a light source, but it suffered from a lot of visual noise when we used the cam in a very dark area of our living room. When were were talking on Skype in a dim area with a light source behind us, fine details of our face were visible, though shadowed.

Performance and Graphics

With its 2.3-GHz Core i5-2410M CPU, 4GB of RAM, Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics, and a 5,400-rpm, 500GB hard drive, the Gateway ID47H02u provides strong performance that's good enough for demanding tasks, from playing 1080p video to crunching large spreadsheets.

On PCMark Vantage, a synthetic benchmark that measures overall performance, the ID47H02u scored a strong 6,322, well above the 5,596 thin-and-light notebook category average and the Core i3-powered HP Pavilion dm4t's mark of 5,124. However, the Core i5-powered Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820TG provided a similar score of 6,348.

Gateway ID47H02uThe 500GB, 5,400-rpm hard drive booted into Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) in a relatively quick 48 seconds, noticeably faster than the 65.5-second category average. The drive took an unremarkable 3 minutes and 41 seconds to complete the LAPTOP File Transfer Test, which involves copying 4.97GB of mixed media files. That's a rate of 23 MBps, a little slower than the 26 MBps category average, the 24 MBps provided by the HP Pavilion dm4t, and the 25.4 MBps offered by the Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820TG.

When it comes to transcoding video, the Gateway ID47H02u holds its own against the competition. Due to the Intel 2nd Generation Core i5 CPU's QuickSync technology, the ID47H02u was able to transcode an HD video in just 26 seconds, using Cyberlink Media Espresso. That's about 3 times faster than the 1:17 category average and the 38-second time offered by the HP Pavilion dm4t.

Graphics Performance

Don't expect to do any serious 3D gaming with the Gateway ID47H02u's integrated Intel HD 3000 chip. On 3DMark06, a synthetic benchmark that measures overall graphics prowess, the notebook scored a modest 4,076, on a par with the category average (4,006), but way lower than the Nvidia GT425M-powered ASUS U41Jf's 7,597 score and the AMD Radeon HD 6550M-enabled Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820TG's mark of 7,844.

On autodetect settings, the ID47H02u managed 35 frames per second in World of Warcraft, which is playable but less than half the 86 fps category average or the 106 fps provided by the ASUS U41Jf. However, when we turned the settings up to maximum, that rate dropped to an unplayable 15 fps, half the 30 fps category average.

The more demanding game Far Cry 2 was too much for the Gateway ID47H02u to handle at any setting, as it managed only 23 fps at 1024 x 768 resolution and 14 fps at its native 1366 x 768.

Battery Life

Gateway ID47H02uThe Gateway ID47H02u packs enough juice to last just about all day. On the LAPTOP Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi, the ID47H02u lasted a strong 7 hours and 8 minutes, nearly 2 hours longer than the thin-and-light notebook category average of 5:15 and the Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820TG's time of 5:11.GATEWAY NX210 Laptop Battery The Pavilion dm4t managed a similar time of 7:02.

Configurations

Our review configuration, the ID47H02u, carries an MSRP of $699. For that price, you get the 2.3-GHz Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. For $679, you can get the ID49C14u, which has a 2.5-GHz Core i3 CPU and a lower-capacity battery, but we'd recommend going with our configuration because of its faster performance and longer battery life.

Software

Gateway bundles the ID47H02u with a standard array of utilities, including Acer Video Web Camera for capturing stills and video, Gateway Recovery management for creating a restore disc, and Gateway MyBackup for backing up files or even imaging the whole system. Gateway Games is a portal that lets you purchase and download a wide variety of free and paid casual games.

Gateway ID47H02u

Gateway ID47H02uA Social Networks app launches automatically when you hit the social networking button that sits to the right of the backspace key. GATEWAY NV5615U Laptop Battery The app shows the latest updates from your FaceBook, Flickr, and YouTube feeds and allows you to post Facebook updates. We like that you can add your favorite friends on the Friends tab in this software and that there's a separate tab just for photos. However, there's no support for Google+, LinkedIn, Twitter, or other popular social networks.

Verdict

The Gateway ID47H02u is a strong choice for students, families, and anyone else who needs a highly portable notebook with a dash of style. The Dolby-powered speakers also help this 14-inch machine stand out. However, we're not big fans of the glossy touchpad. We prefer the HP dm4t, which has a better touchpad and similar battery life for $100 less. But if you want Core i5 power, long endurance, and a sleek design at a reasonable price, this Gateway laptop is worth the investment.

Drill Model Best Score Pwr Dur Wgt Spd Bat
DeWalt DCD760KL - 86 B C B A A C

DeWalt DCD760KL Strengths & Weaknesses:

Design
Acceptable Design - While this drill has one or more design features that received a C rating, it can still be a good choice if that area is not critical to your particular needs.
Power
Below Average Power - Delivers up to 350 Unit Watts Out of power, about 10% less than the class average. Power can sometimes be traded for weight or cost.
SpeedFast - Runs at speeds up to 1700 RPM, about 11% faster than the average drill in its class. The DeWalt DCD760KL ranks in the top 25% of 18 volt cordless drills for speed.
WeightLight-Weight - Weighs only 4 lbs, about 21% lighter than the average 18V cordless drill. Ranks in the top 27% of its class for being light-weight.
Battery
Below Average Run-Time - Battery endurance is adequate for many work applications, but is 46% less than the class average. Uses Li-ion batteries with a charge rating of 1.1 Ah.
User ReviewsHighly Satisfied Users - Rated 4.6 of 5 stars by 52 users. Most owners are very satisfied with the performance and value of this cordless drill and would recommend it to others.
Power RatioHigh Power-to-Weight - Ranks in the top 45% of its voltage class for power-to-weight ratio, about 5% higher than average. Higher power-to-weight indicates an efficient design.
Gearbox
Nylon Gears - Transmission includes at least some nylon gears which may need replacing after years of extended use. A nylon gearbox helps reduce drill weight.
Chuck
Plastic Chuck Sleeve - While the chuck itself is metal, the tightening sleeve is made of plastic and may be susceptioble to cracking if the drill is repeatedly dropped.
Motor Brushes
No External Access - The motor brushes can only be accessed internally by taking the drill apart. While not a coomon problem, external access makes the replacement job much easier.
WarrantyLonger Warranty - Backed by DeWalt's limited 3-year warranty. This provides extra protection against potential design defects or premature part failure.
Bit ChangeOne-Hand - The single-sleeve chuck has a spindle lock so the drill bit can be changed with one hand. This is a very convenient feature that makes the job go faster.
ChargerQuick Charge - The DeWalt DCD760KL includes a battery charger that will recharge a battery in only 30 minutes. Long charge times are a common complaint with some drills.
Belt Hook
No Belt Hook - Does not include this convenient feature that frees-up both your hands to perform other tasks in-between drilling.
Work LightWork Light - Contains an integrated LED work light that illuminates your work area and allows you to clearly see your drilling / driving position and progress.
Side Handle
No Side Handle - Omits the option to use a side handle that can provide stable support when drilling and driving larger drill bits and screws where additional torque is required.
Fuel Gauge
No Fuel Gauge - Does not come equipped with a handy battery charge indicator that allows you to glance at your drill and check your battery life while you're working.
